Montaz
If you ever find yourself wandering through Newmarket and craving something bold, rich, and far from ordinary, Montaz on 30 Old Station Rd might just be the destination you didn’t know you needed. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill curry house - Montaz takes Indian dining and lifts it with creativity, a refined atmosphere, and flavors that know exactly how to keep things interesting.
What strikes you first is the modern yet warm vibe. The space is elegant but unpretentious, perfect for a solo evening recharge or a dinner catch-up with friends. Accessibility is thoughtfully designed, from the wheelchair-accessible entrance to the comfy, inclusive seating. It's clear that Montaz values comfort without compromising on style.
Now, let’s talk food - because this is where Montaz absolutely owns the spotlight.
Start with something light like the Papadum or a crisp Samosa. But don’t be surprised if you’re immediately tempted by the Paneer Tikka - lightly charred, perfectly seasoned, and oozing with that rich, creamy warmth that paneer lovers dream about. If you prefer something meatier, the Lamb Chops are no joke. Tender, juicy, and served with just the right hit of spice, they’re a must-order.
Montaz isn’t shy about mixing things up. The Chukundari Duck is a bit of a showstopper - beetroot-marinated and beautifully plated. It's the kind of dish you don’t expect at a traditional Indian restaurant, but that’s the point. They’re not chasing tradition blindly; they’re reimagining it.
When it comes to mains, the classics hold strong. The Chicken Tikka Masala here doesn’t just go through the motions - it’s silky, balanced, and comes with that addictively creamy tomato base you hope for. Or, for something deeper and earthier, the Dal Makhani and Saffron Rice combo hits with buttery richness and a slow-cooked depth that lingers.
Craving heat? The Vindaloo pulls no punches - bold, fiery, but not reckless. It's tailored for those who enjoy a challenge, and pairing it with a cooling pint of beer or a simple Chaat salad can make the experience more rounded.
Speaking of drinks, Montaz boasts a surprisingly thoughtful beverage menu. From wine lovers to beer enthusiasts, there's something for every palate. Whether it’s a crisp lager or a robust red to match that spicy Lamb Biryani, the pairings feel intentional. The Pint Pot offerings are especially popular - perfect for winding down over a flavorful spread.
For those who can’t leave without dessert, the Chocolate Cake and Mochi are more than afterthoughts. Rich, not overly sweet, and beautifully plated - they carry the same care you’ll find across the rest of the menu.
One of Montaz’s strengths lies in how it balances variety with inclusivity. Vegan and vegetarian diners aren’t stuck with basic options - there’s actual flavor-forward variety here. That’s not always the case at Indian restaurants with traditional leanings, so it's worth celebrating.
Service? Smooth, attentive, and never overbearing. It’s the kind of place where staff offer genuine recommendations and seem to know their menu inside out. Whether you’re dining in, grabbing a takeaway, or having it delivered, that care and consistency shows.
What makes Montaz stand apart in a town with no shortage of dining spots is its confident mix of refinement and familiarity. It’s Indian food that respects the roots but isn’t afraid to evolve. From the laid-back solo diner to the couple looking for a cozy dinner out, there’s a quiet versatility to Montaz that keeps people coming back - not just for the food, but for the experience itself.
Reviews
Went to the newly refurbished Montaz last night for an impromptu meal. Classy decor with a warm, welcoming vibe. Food was spot on. Every dish packed with flavour and presented beautifully. The lamb chops were the highlight for me. Prices match the quality and still feel like great value. Top service from the staff too. Highly recommend if you’re after Michelin level food without the Michelin price tag.
Excellent food, great menu, the waiters were knowledgeable and welcoming. We brought our kids and the staff were very kind with them. We will definitely come again. Excellent restaurant and never disappoints.
We ordered an arrange of starters with a main, which arrived swiftly and was very tasteful. The service was friendly and of high standard, helping to better our experience greatly - notably from Mobin. Would highly recommend and is the best in town.
